Description:
FACTORY Game Scene ENGRAVED Antique CHRISTIAN STURM of Suhl Hammer CAPE GUN

Gorgeous GERMAN High End HUNTING/SPORTING Gun

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Factory Game Scene Engraved Christian Sturm Double Barrel Side by Side Hammer Cape Gun made circa the 1880s in Suhl, Germany. Christian Sturm was a German gunmaker active circa 1849 through the 1850s. Christian Sturm operated a Luxus Weapons Factory in Suhl which he founded in 1849 and employed 45 workers in 1873. He was still listed as a gunmaker in 1900. This would have been a great gun for upland hunting.

These were typically high-end hunting weapons that featured a side by side configuration with one barrel rifled and the other smooth. The hunter would use the rifled barrel to fire long range, precise shots against large game and use the smooth barrel loaded with buck shot or a slug for a quick follow up shot, especially on large and dangerous game, or the smooth bore could be loaded with shot to make it feasible to hunt fowl at the same time without carrying multiple guns. The gun has two triggers to allow either barrel as needed.
Cape guns made in Germany, Belgium, and Austria usually have the rifled barrel on the right side (as is this one), while British made cape guns are usually reversed. These were supremely handy firearms that could also be used to defend the homestead or put game on the table. This gun was manufactured in the late 19th century prior to the 1891 German proofing law.

The overall condition is fine. Original finishes and patinas are preserved. Excellent actions. Both bores are shiny bright, smooth and sharply rifled. Fine stock and forend. Sharp wrist checkering. Markings and engravings are defined and clear.

This is a very light and beautiful shotgun from 19th Century Germany!
