Special Order MARLIN M93 Lever Action .30-30 WIN HUNTING/SPORTING Rifle C&R

Marlin’s First Smokeless Powder Rifle

Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Special Order J.M. Marlin Model 93 Rifle chambered in .30-30 Winchester, made circa 1905-21 in New Haven, Connecticut. Marlin Firearms was founded in the 1870s by John Marlin and was one of Winchester’s biggest competitors for the lever action market in the late-19th and into the 20th Century. Marlin produced a large assortment of firearms such as lever-action rifles, pump-action shotguns and single shot rifles. The Model 1893 represents Marlin’s first smokeless powder lever action rifle. It features a solid top frame with side ejection and a smooth action. The barrel is a round medium weight of 26 inches, chambered in the .30-30 WIN cartridge.

In 1905, the Model 1893 nomenclature changed to “Model 93,” saddle rings were optional, and barrels were stamped “Special Smokeless Steel.” Some shooters still preferred black powder loads, though, and that same year Marlin came out with a limited run of Model 93s chambered for .32-40 and .38-55 and stamped “For Black Powder Only.” In time, the Model 93 became the Model 36, and then the 336, which remains in the line today, although, due to recent ownership changes, the lever-actions are made now in Ilion, N.Y., not Connecticut.
As with many early Marlins, serial number records for the Model 1893 are incomplete. The inletted “Bull’s Eye” in the stock began in 1921. The barrels on post-1924 barrels were stamped “Marlin Firearms Corporation”, where pre-1924 barrels were stamped “Marlin Firearms Company”. This rifle was one of the most popular Marlin lever-action models ever made with over one million model 1893s manufactured.

The Model 1893 and its successors found particular favor in Canada, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest, where precipitation combined with cold temperatures sometimes caused top-eject designs to freeze solid. During the Klondike Gold Rush, the solid-top Marlin design was preferred by many prospectors facing subzero temperatures and dangerous animals, since the solid top frame was better at keeping freezing rain, snow and dirt out of the operating parts of the action. This one is in good shape and remains a classic!

The overall condition is fine. Original blue is preserved. Refinished case colors and stock. Minimal handling evidence on the wood. The bore is in good shape, retains some shimmer but has mostly dimmed. Strong rifling. Markings are legible. The action is strong. The level sticks a little bit, but does not impede the action function. Visible numbers match. Rear peep sight. The receiver is import marked.
