This gun was the quintessential “buffalo rifle” of the 1870s. Remington initially introduced it about 1867, with its No. 1 “Rolling Block.” The Remington Rolling Block had a sturdy, simple action that was relatively inexpensive, just what many governments wanted in the latter half of the 19th Century. They were popular with civilians as well. Rolling block rifles were produced in various action sizes for calibers from .50 centerfire all the way down to .22 rimfire and survived well into the 20th Century. Compared to more sophisticated single shot actions like the Browning/Winchester Model 1885, the Remington Rolling Block was relatively economical to produce, and this contributed to its longevity. Remington rolling block rifles were produced as military muskets and carbines as well as for civilian use and were adopted by many countries. These included the U.S. (first by the Navy in 1867 and later in limited numbers in .45-70 by the Army), Argentina, Denmark, Guatemala, Holland, Puerto Rico (Voluntarios), Spain, Sweden/Norway, Uruguay, and others. They were also purchased by state militias, most notably the New York Militia. The overall condition is good. Original, mixed brown and gray patinas. The action is strong, and has been updated with a rimfire firing pin. The bore is good for its age, has darkened with serviceable rifling. This example sports a solid stock that remains in very good shape with average handling evidence. Some filler is present around the rear sight. Absent rear sight. Lightly scroll engraved frame. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30 inches. Caliber: .50 Rimfire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
