Falling Block Single Shot Rifle in .38 Caliber with Sling
Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Allen & Co. Falling Block Rifle in .38 Rimfire, made circa the early 1860s in Worcester, Massachusetts. Fewer than 2,000 of these rifles are thought to have been made in any variant. Though not standard issue, this rifle saw service in the American Civil War through private purchases by soldiers. It features a half-octagonal, half-round barrel with a very neat adjustable rear sight. The rear sight tips and its arm points to various ranges which also have notches which allow the arm to rest in under spring tension. This rifle is equipped with the optional sling loops ahead of the forearm and under the buttstock. The lowering action of the breech block automatically ejected the spent cartridge.
The top of the barrel is marked “E. ALLEN & CO. WORCESTER MASS. / ALLENS PAT SEPT 18. 1860.”. The butt plate has a cleaning rod trap.
The overall condition is good. Original finishes. Strong action. The bore is good for its age, has darkened and does contain a budge. Mixed gray patinas. The fancy walnut stock is solid with an average amount of wear and light chipping. Markings are legible.
