Winchester Model 12 – 16 Gauge – 28" Barrel - Nickel Steel – Manufactured 1928
A shotgun design that is produced from 1912 until 1964 must have something going for it. There were even some special and limited production runs after that. Almost 2 million Model 12 shotguns were sold over its production lifecysle. Our shotgun is serial number 593702, which would indicate a manufacturing date of 1928. The serial number on the barrel and the receiver do match.
The 28 inch barrel is labeled as Nickel steel, the more sought after variety. This 16 gauge model is chambered for 2-3/4" shells. The barrel is marked as a fixed Modified choke. A single bead sight sits at the end of the barrel. A push button safety is at the forward edge of the trigger guard. The shotgun will slam fire, as it was designed to do.
The wood forearm is corrugated or ribbed in design. The stock is a semi-pistol grip and ends in a black, plastic Winchester buttpad. Length of pull is approximately 13 inches.
The action on the shotgun is smooth. The bore is clean and the barrel is bright. The wooden forearm is in Excellent condition. The stock would rate as Fair, primarily due to finish loss at the rear of the stock and a slight crack measuring approximately 1.25 inches in the lower portion of the stock, near the butt. The Winchester buttplate has a chip on the lower portion. The right side of the receiver is Very Good with minimal finish loss. The left side of the receiver shows shallow freckling and light pitting. The barrel finish is mostly Good with some light pitting. Please review the photos to form your own opinion on the areas that we mentioned.
Overall, this is a 97 year old vintage shotgun that is in age appropriate condition. If a vintage Winchester has been on your Want List, see if this one will check that box.
