Offered here is a hard to find, fine example of a proper rifled and sighted Civil War era U.S. Springfield Model 1842 percussion musket, that came right of an estate of an 80 year collection. Less than 10,000 of these .69 caliber muskets were converted between c. 1856-1859 with rifled bores and fitted with the long range sights by the Springfield and Harpers Ferry Armories. The usage rate of this variant was extremely high during the Civil War. Hence, these rifled and sighted 1842s are hard to find today, and the limited surviving examples are typically in rough shape, excluding this very fresh example. The edges and markings in this musket remain sharp and defined overall. It has just the right signs of some use that Civil War collectors look for. The lock has an “1854” date and barrel tang has an “1855” date, in which it was certainly originally made this way. The breech of the barrel has the “V/P” proofs above the eagle head stamp, the lock has the federal eagle motif and Springfield manufacturer marking above its date, the left stock flat has a very nice bordered “JS” inspection cartouche stamp, and the buttplate is “US” marked. A socket bayonet accompanies the musket, and appears to have never left its side based on the unmistakable matching patina. As an antique, this can ship directly to your doorstep in most states!
