Special focus on custom contemporary muzzleloading rifles and black powder cartridge rifles. Description: This is a very good example of the.50-70 Type I US Navy rolling block rifle produced under contract at the Springfield Armory. The original Navy order was for 22,013 of this model. The first 10,000 were rejected by the Navy due to rear sight being placed too close to the receiver. These were purchased by Poultney and Trimble of Baltimore and sold to France during the Franco-Prussian War. This is one of those. Overall length is approximately 48.5”. The 32.5” long round barrel has taken on a pleasing plumb brown appearance with a few scattered small dings. Stamped “P” on left side at the breech. At the muzzle there is a blade sight on top and an intact lug for a saber bayonet underneath. A long-range, flip-up sight is mounted at the breech. The bore remains clean and bright with good rifling. The receiver is also bright with scattered light surface staining. The right side is stamped with an eagle over “USN / Springfield / 1870”. The mechanics of the rifle work perfectly. The two line Remington patent information is clearly stamped on the receiver tang. Butt plate is stamped “US” and the two barrel bands are stamped “U”. Sling swivels are in place and the cleaning rod/ramrod is complete with threaded end. The wood is very good with a few of the usual small dents and dings. A faint oval cartouche ESA (Erskine S. Allin) remains on the left side behind the receiver. A nice, clean rolling block rifle. Included is a very good example of the Ames export saber bayonet. These have the crossed cannons and anchor on the handle, but lack any inspection stamps. The blade is unsharpened and has scattered staining and very light pinprick pitting. The scabbard is intact, but has extensive age checking. Stitching is solid. $2100 + Shipping. Rifle only, $1750 + Shipping. Price: $2,100.00 |
