Description: Standard configuration Remington New Model 1858 Army revolver, as manufactured from 1863 to 1875 with a total production of approximately 132,000 units, cal. .44 Percussion, SN: 122364, with 8" octagonal barrel having fixed blade front sight with traditional V notch rear sight. Top of barrel marked "PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858" over "E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION NEW YORK U.S.A" over "NEW - MODEL". Serial number "122364" stamped under barrel and on left side of grip frame. Two-piece walnut grips, the left panel displaying an "OHA" inspection cartouche. Blued steel barrel, frame, cylinder, and loading lever; brass trigger guard; color case hardened hammer and trigger, most of these components with lettered inspection markings. The Remington revolver served as a secondary, supplemental issue firearm for the Union Army until the Colt factory fire of 1864, after which the U.S. government ordered large quantities of these revolvers. By 1865 the government had purchased 115,557, this example likely to have seen Civil War service given its serial number within the wartime production range. Condition: VG+ original finish with sharp edge wear and handling marks, including the grip straps, except for the cylinder that has more advanced toning as carefully imaged. Mustard-toned trigger guard. Comparable condition grips with a sharp, easily discernible cartouche, the left panel having a very small chip on top left corner. Mirror bright bore. Correct manual mechanics with each cylinder indexing properly and locking tightly upon full cock.
