Synopsis:

High original condition Remington Model 1871 single-shot Rolling Block Army pistol with a matching grip, well marked military cartouche, and a mirror bore. Manufactured between 1872-1888 with approximately 5,000 units acquired by the U.S. A classic, early, US military pistol that would be difficult to improve upon! ANTIQUE!

Description:

Standard configuration Remington Model 1871 Army single-shot Rolling Block pistol manufactured circa 1872-1888, approximately 6,000 produced of which 5,000 sold to the U.S. Army, featuring an 8-inch barrel in .50 CF with SN 5614 on the left grip frame and inside of the wooden grip. The pistol has a blued barrel with fixed front sight, color case-hardened frame, and a notched in-the-white loading gate that doubles as the rear sight. The left side of the frame is marked "REMINGTON'S ILION, N.Y. U.S.A." above patent dates reading "PAT. MAY 3D NOV 15TH 1864 APRIL 17TH 1866" with the ordnance inspection letters "P " and "S" . Fitted with smooth walnut grips the left side of the grip displays a script CRS cartouche for ordnance sub-inspector Curtis R. Stickney. Disassembly shows “2809” and "5614" on the frame under the grips with "5614"repeated inside the wood grip. The U.S. Ordnance Department acquired 5,000 of these Remington Rolling Block single-shot pistols circa 1871-1872, with much of the payment made through a trade arrangement involving Remington New Model percussion revolvers that the Ordnance Department exchanged back to Remington for the Rolling Block pistols. However, fewer than 1,400 of the M1871 pistols were actually issued for field trials, quickly replaced by the newly adopted Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army revolver.

Condition:

Near excellent original condition with the barrel retaining 97-98% of its bright blue, comparable condition color case hardening of the frame, and fire blue on the screws and trigger. In-the-white loading gate and hammer with minimal spotting. VG+ forend and grip, the cartouche on the left side of the grip easily visible with no evidence of touch-up. Mirror bright bore with sharp rifling. Correct manual mechanics.
