Description:
Cimarron is well-known for their reproductions of famous firearms from the Old West. The Winchester Model of 1873 is one of the most famous from that period in U.S. history. The 1873 was built around the concept of a rifle being chambered for the same ammunition as the owner’s pistol. This feature had multiple advantages, not least of which was the owner of the two guns having to carry only round. This also helped to reduce the overall weight of the ammunition carried as well as allowing the owner to carry more rounds, an important consideration when traveling between distant towns with little chance of finding a store to restock on ammo in between. This rifle is chambered for the legendary .44-40 Winchester. This is the cartridge most often associated with the Winchester ‘73, having been labeled as the “Cartridge that Won the West” with the rifle and the Colt Peacemaker which chambered it being referred to as the “Rifle…” and “Pistol…” that “Won the West” respectively. One simple reason for the .44-40’s popularity back in the Old West was its stopping power. It was well suited as a self-defense round and was even considered suitable for hunting deer at that time (it is not suitable by today’s standards). The Cimarron 1873 shown here is the carbine. It has a 19-inch, round barrel, a magazine tube with 10-round capacity, dovetail ladder rear sight, wood forearm and buttstock, and a blued receiver. This rifle exhibits light wear to the finish. There is a small dot of finish loss on either side of the receiver at the rear, and one small sliver at the front left end. The dust cover has some wear at the front edge. The lever exhibits some wear at the front on the left side. This is typical for a lever action. Finally, the lower front edge of the receiver exhibits some minor wear. The wood furniture is in immaculate shape. The bore is very clean and the lever operates with no issues. A common aftermarket modification for lever action rifles such as the 1873 is a folding peep rear sight. This setup increases the sight radius of the rifle, and the type of sight aperture is more suitable for those with impaired eyesight. The Model 1873 is a fine rifle and the Cimarron replicas are a fine example of this. If you are a lever action fan do not pass up the opportunity to own one of these rifles.
