This is one of several that will be listed soon. **** RARE BRITISH PROOF MARKED WINCHESTER MODEL 1890 **** You are looking at an excellent condition, all original, Winchester 1890, 1st model/first year non-takedown (SOLID FRAME), case hardened, in very rare 22 W.R.F. Beautiful original case hardening on the receiver; 24 3/8" octagon BBL; four correct British proof marks; No Winchester proof marks as Winchester didn’t proof mark until 1908, 1st model - 1st year production rifle. This rifle has the very rare broken "D" on BBL inscription in the word "Manufactured" and this is correct and documented in Schwing's Vol-I book on the 1890 & 1906, Page - 101. It states: "It should be pointed out that this first barrel marking has a subtle variation. From serial number 1 to somewhere between 11,000 and 14,000, Winchester used a die that had an imperfection. The "D" in the word "manufactured" was broken, with the result that it did not form a compete letter. Collectors refer to this as the Broken "D" marking. After the serial range 11,000 to 14,000, Winchester had a new die made for this barrel marking that eliminated the Broken "D" letter. This new die also increased the height of the lettering slightly. The overall appearance of the 90-1 marking stayed the same." This fine Winchester Model 1890 comes with a CODY LETTER (see pictures) According to Schwing's book, this first model 1890 was only manufactured until January of 1893, when the last solid frame was built; and then Winchester moved to the new (second model) take down version of the 1890. Estimated around 15,000 solid frame 1890's were manufactured, few with the "Broken D". Additional information on this rifle:
