This is a Remington-made, 1849 dated rifle (on both barrel and lock) with the barrel having a mottled gray and plum-brown patina along its length, as well as slightly grayer at the muzzle which was rebated for 2 5/8" in order to accept a socket bayonet. The lock has a mostly pewter gray patina with clear "REMINGTON’S / HERKIMER / N.Y." marking ahead of the hammer. Interestingly, the rifling was modified from the original seven-groove rifling to an unusual fourteen-groove system (reminiscent of of "Micro-Groove" rifling, but for a 19th century large bore percussion military rifle). This was done awhile ago, probably mid-late 19th or early 20th century. The walnut stock has small handling marks and blemishes scattered about the original oil finish, with a crisp inspector cartouche on the left side, and a large bruise on the top of the wrist on the right side, just above the rear of the lockplate. The brass bands, trigger guard, and patchbox are in very good shape with a mellow ochre tarnish throughout. A correct brass-tipped ramrod is included. The rifle was given a variant of the 1859 bayonet alteration (with rebated barrel and bayonet stud added to the underside of the barrel near the muzzle) and is accompanied by an original "US" marked socket bayonet. The bayonet measures 20 1/2" overall, with an 18 1/4" angular blade with wide single fuller and hollow-ground back flutes. The metal has an overall dark plum-brown patina, with some scattered spots of mild freckling and pinprick pitting, mostly on the socket. This is a great looking "Mississippi Rifle", with a desirable bayonet, and a very unusual rifling system. The rifle is in very good-fine condition overall. Antique; Price: $2,295.00 Antique: Yes |
