The Smith & Wesson Model 60 "First Run" refers to its introduction in 1965, marking it as the first mass-produced stainless steel revolver, a significant innovation based on the smaller J-frame Chief's Special (.38 Special) but made durable with stainless steel for rust resistance, becoming instantly popular for concealed carry and off-duty law enforcement, and remaining a classic choice for personal defense ever since.
Key Characteristics of Early Models:
  • Material: All stainless steel construction, a first for production revolvers.
  • Frame: J-frame, compact and lightweight for easy concealment.
  • Chambering: Initially .38 Special, later models (like the 60-15) offered .357 Magnum capability.
  • Capacity: 5-shot cylinder.
  • Action: Double-action/single-action (DA/SA) with an external hammer.
  • Sights: Simple ramp front sight and fixed rear sight.
  • Grips: Often came with checkered wood grips with S&W medallions.
Why it's Significant:
  • Innovation: Its stainless steel design solved the rust issues of blued steel revolvers, making it ideal for varied environments.
  • Popularity: Quickly adopted by police and civilians for its reliability, concealability, and power (especially later .357 models).
  • Legacy: It established the stainless steel J-frame as a cornerstone of Smith & Wesson's lineup, leading to many variations,
