Description:
WINCHESTER M1895 .30-40 KRAG Hunting/Sporting Lever Action SHORT RIFLE C&R

“SHORTIE” REPEATING Rifle Manufactured in 1901

Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action “Short” Rifle manufactured in 1901 in New Haven, Connecticut, and chambered in .30 U.S., also known as the .30-40 Krag. The name “Short Rifle” is derived from the fact that this rifle is shorter than a rifle, not only in barrel length, but also in length of pull and weight. This example sports Winchester factory oval proofs that were added on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech when the rifle was returned to the factory sometime in 1905 or after. It appears to have originally left the factory in saddle ring carbine configuration and was later returned to the factory for conversion to its current short sporting rifle configuration. It is mounted with a “sporting rifle” pattern, Schnabel tipped forearm with an ebony insert and a straight grip stock with a carbine pattern buttplate containing a couple of cleaning tools.

The Model 1895 was the first Winchester rifle to feature a box magazine located underneath the action instead of the tubular magazine design, which had remained fundamentally unchanged from the Winchester Model 1866. This allowed the rifle to safely chamber military and hunting cartridges with pointed bullets. The M1895 was also the last of the lever-action rifles to be designed by John Moses Browning and featured a rear locking bolt as in his previous designs dating back to the Winchester Model 1886. The M1895 was the strongest lever-action rifle Winchester had produced, designed to handle the increased pressures generated by the more powerful smokeless powder cartridges entering common use at the time of its introduction.

This 1895 Winchester has a bit of everything going for it. It is an innovative design by none other than John Moses Browning, a history of usage by many of the top hunters of the early-20th Century, an early issue, and chambered in a neat old cartridge that is still available today!

The overall condition is fine. This example was factory converted to a short rifle. Original blue. Excellent action. Bright and sharply rifled bore. Fine buttstock and forend. Markings are clear. Carbine pattern buttplate.
