An outstanding Krieghoff Neptune Drilling from the Long collection is here to enjoy.. A sub 8lb dream of precision, 20ga x 20ga x 7 X 57R is such a cool combo to hunt. All hand cut engraving & checkering with unbelievable detail all the way to a checkered muzzle. A pinless sidelock, sling swivels wearing a quick detachable Leuopold 1.5X - 20X VX3 Gold Ring Scope. The scope mount work done by JJ Perodeau himself. under which is a pop up leaf sight deployed by the safety lever, a marvel of ingenuity. Note the screws are turned to align, which is an indicator of “one of one” bench work at the time of manufacture. This gun was not machine made and should not be compared to most imported and mass produced combination guns.
The detail at the business end of the barrels is an indicator, the steel is checkered. Such details are further evidence of hand work.
I regard the wood as 3X or better. In Europe it is probably 4x wood.
What is noteworthy is the stock is not carved, but rather hand checkered. This is important as most Americans prefer this style.
The splinter fore-end is correct for any double shotgun.
This gun butt-stock does not have excessive drop like so many Euro guns. A really big plus for a firearm with a scope!
This is not mass market import, it is a best quality hunting piece. A expert’s choice for mixed bag stalking and sitting in a hide. Drillings would be much more commonly used except they are expensive and often chambered in obscure calibers.
A 20X20x7x57R drilling is fundamental different than the typical 12x12x30-06 and 16x16x9.3x72. This was build to use on birds in flight, which requires more bench work to get right, Yes, it will do just fine for hogs and Bucks with slugs or buckshot plus long shot opportunities at big game with the rifle barrel, but it is built and balanced like a shotgun. Mount the gun without the scope, it is close to the feel of a “best Grade” side by side.
When well made the rifle barrel accuracy is exceptional because a three barrel drilling arrangement offers a stiff platform for the rifle barrel.
I met a fellow in Zimbabwe that used one for leopards. You only get one shot at Chewy. Having a shotgun for follow-up is handy. He had a heavy 12x12 3inch over a 30-06. He was a one gun hunter and felt the ease of travel justified his choice and when not hunting plains game he shot sand grouse and Franklins on the wing. I would rather have the 7x57 than any 30-06 for mixed bag hunting. I would rather have a 20 for Sand Grouse and Doves in Africa.
This Neptun has a pop up rear sight activated by the safety/cocking piece and a correct hand detachable scope mount. JJ Perodeau, a justly famous gun maker and double gun expert now living in Oklahoma mounted the classic scope by Leopold.
This compact scope is as good (or better) than the typical rail mounted Zeiss because of the life time warranty. This matters when carrying a small scope in a vest or coat pocket where it gets banged around. This model of scope sets the compact scope standard for speed of target acquisition, field of view and clarity at hunting ranges.
A proficient wing-shot with proper techniques can shoot birds on the fly without removing the scope but the concept of a drilling is to have one 20 barrel loaded with bird shot, the other 20 loaded with buckshot and a 7x57R Round in the chamber and the compact scope in your pocket...in other words, on a walk with a Neptune you are ready to take all manner of birds or beasts from a few feet to 200 yards and more.
