Smith, 1904, 12 Gauge, 7lbs. 12oz., Chokes F/F, LOP 13 5/8", DAH 12 13/16", DAC 1 3/8" Serial Number: 202345 Built in 1904, care and attention was paid to every aspect of this Special Order A2. Only 192 12-gauge A2’s were ever made, and this example stands out with it’s special order features, likely making it essentially one of one. The “Second Style” engraving found on this shotgun includes a beautiful rose bouquet at the center of the sidelocks, surrounded by detailed scroll with a small, bordered gamebird field scene at the very front of the lock, a feeding quail on the left side and a swimming duck on the right. In an oval field scene at the front of the frame you’ll find a setter on the left and a pointer on the right, each having caught the scent of a bird and holding a strong point. The remainder of the frame, barrel lug, barrel fences, top lever and top tang are covered with detailed scroll and geometric border engraving. Going forward from the frame, you’ll find a forend that has a fine bordered, fleur-de-lis checkering pattern, with a banjo-shaped roll release and triangle ebony tip. Inside the forend, the iron is engraved with borders and the ejector patent number and date. The forend lug is stamped “A2”. Set atop the forend are the 30” barrels, the right of which is engraved with “Sir Joseph Whitworth Fluid Compressed Steel” and the right “Made to Order by the Hunter Arms Co. Fulton N.Y.” The barrels’ breech and muzzle each host a border and a wedge of scroll along the sides. The matting of the tapered top rib has a smooth border, and the rib extension is scroll engraved and set off with a gold inlay at the junction of the rib. The Hunter One SST trigger is nitre blued and protected by an intricately scroll engraved trigger guard that has “E. W. Genter” inlayed in gold at the center of the bow. The English Walnut buttstock with Prince of Wales pistol grip has borderless fleur-de-lis engraving and an interesting grain pattern with deep, rich mineral lines and waves of color through the entire piece, terminating in a Silvers pad. The original factory finishes of this gun are rich and beautiful. The factory blue of the barrels, rib, and trigger guard retain 95% of their original blue – fading at the common carry points and with some delicate handling marks. The factor case color is richest behind the barrel fences, on the top of the frame and on the bottom tang. The case color on the water table, forend iron, bottom of the frame and in the center of the locks is strong. Overall case color is 88% coverage. The forend finish is original and could be graded at 95%. The buttstock has had some finish added for preservation and shows some light handling marks, with the fine checkering in excellent condition. The bores are bright and shiny, The gun is mechanically excellent and is a VFI CERTIFIED GUN HAVING THE ACTION AND FOREND IRON STRIPPED, ULTRASONIC CLEANED, ALL PARTS SCRUBBED CLEAN, INSPECTED FOR FUNCTION AND INTEGRITY, LUBRICATED, AND REASSEMBLED, NOW CARRYING A 90-DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY. This is a $450 service in our shop. This gun was ordered as a live bird gun, and as such has no safety, but the trigger, trigger selector, and auto ejectors operate flawlessly. A quick search of the internet finds a couple of possibilities for men known as E.W. Genter in the era of this gun’s manufacturer. I’m not sure which of them it was that enjoyed shooting live birds, but he had impeccable taste. This fine shotgun stands out in so many ways. It was a gun that was certainly used for its purpose, not simply purchased and stashed away, but it has class, style, and craftsmanship in every respect of its manufacture.
