Description:
Antique Commercial REMINGTON M1865 NAVY Rolling Block ANCHOR MARKED Pistol

VERY SCARCE! 1 of 500 Manufactured 1866-1870

Here Ancestry Guns presents a Scarce Antique Remington Commercial Model of 1865 Navy Frame Rolling Block Pistol made in Ilion, New York circa 1866 to 1870. This pistol is essentially the civilian version of the Navy Model of 1865/1866, making it extremely rare. It is estimated by Jerry Landskrom in "Remington Rolling Block Pistols" that less than 500 of these commercial versions of the Navy pistols were made. The top of the barrel is marked with the Navy anchor but bears no other inspection marks, typical of the commercial models.
The rolling block design was an evolution of the split breech carbine design of Leonard Geiger. Geiger’s intent was to design an arm using a metallic cartridge that could be cheaply and easily manufactured for use during the American Civil War. Remington manufactured about 20,000 split breech carbines in three different rimfire calibers, but most were delivered too late to be used in the war. These pistols were a strange selection for a martial pistol given the prevalence of revolvers by this time and the obvious drawbacks of single shot weapons. Nonetheless, they are powerful sidearms and are incredibly reliable, just like the Remington rolling block rifles.

These had a sturdy, simple action that was relatively inexpensive and was just the ticket for shipboard weapons for the U.S. Navy, along with commercial sale, as is this example. Although Remington continues to make rolling block long guns even to this day, these rolling block pistols were made only up to about 1872, since by 1873 both Colt and Remington were free to make cartridge revolvers and the single shot pistol was abandoned as a military weapon.

The overall condition is very good. Much original blue barrel finish is present. Strong action. The bore is bright with strong rifling. Light edge chipping around the forend, but overall good. The grip is nicely checkered and contains an average amount of handling wear. Markings are legible. “anchor” marked barrel.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .50 Rimfire

Overall condition as seen in photos.
