Notes: This ol' Colt SAA was made in 1895, which qualifies as an antique, and can ship directly to the buyer. This is a metallic-black powder revolver, chambered in 44-40, which was a popular rifle cartridge back in the day! The serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard and grip strap all match, and it has a manufacturing number of 457 on the loading gate. Serial # 161825.
Starting with the grips: black hard rubber, checkered with the rampant colt on each side. There are no marks or blemishes on either grip panel. Some wear but very nice!
The trigger guard / grip frame is blued steel. It shows wear where one would grip the gun. Both the front and back straps show bluing wear, but around the trigger area, the bluing is in good condition. No damage to these parts. It has not been used as a hammer as some of these old guns were.
The frame is color case hardened, and the colors are still vivid. The trigger is blued and in fine shape. The hammer is color case hardened and still retains most of its color. The cylinder is blued, and shows the usual drag marks from the bolt, as well as some other drag marks from rubbing on something while it rotated. I will try to show these marks in the photos. On the left side of the frame are 2 lines of patent dates and the rampant colt in a circle. On the bottom, at the front of the trigger guard as well as on the trigger guard is the serial number. This is also on the bottom of the grip strap, just behind the screw.
The 7 ½ inch barrel and ejector housing are blue and show some wear but no abuse. This gun has been used, but appears to have been well cared for. The bluing is wearing thin in the area just in front of the barrel and may be starting to freckle, and there is just a hint of holster wear on the muzzle.
On the top of the barrel is stamped Colts PT. F. A. MFG Co Hartford CT U.S.A. In one line. The small o in Co is underlined. On the left side of the barrel is COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER.
All lettering on the gun is crisp and sharp, and no corners are rounded, indicating that this gun has not been refinished.
The ejector shroud shows some thinning in the bluing. The ejector knob bears the football shaped cuts on he front and back.
The bore is shiny and smooth...there is no pitting and it is not dark like so many of the old black powder guns are. The rifling is clear and obvious, but the corners of the lands are somewhat rounded.
This a well used but well cared for Colt SAA that would look good in any collection...
