LETTERED 1903 mfr. COLT “NEW SERVICE” .44 Russian DA SIX-SHOT Revolver C&R

DESIRABLE SCARCE CALIBER Large Frame Revolver

Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Factory Lettered Colt “New Service” Model Double Action Revolver chambered in the scarce .44 Russian Caliber, made in 1903 in Hartford, Connecticut. This revolver was conceived to be a serious workhorse for the military, police, and anyone who wanted a large double action revolver in a variety calibers. The U.S. Military would go on to adopt versions that would be known as the Model 1909 and the Model 1917 for the Marines and the Army. Other chamberings that were available throughout the period of manufacture (1898-1946) were .38-40 WCF, .44 Russian, .44-40 WCF, .44 Special, .45 Long Colt, .455 Webley (Eley), and later .45 ACP, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, along with other less common calibers. They would see use in the Spanish American War, the World Wars, and even the Vietnam War.

The included factory letter confirms the current configuration, grips not listed, and shipment to J.A. Johnston in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1903, as a single gun shipment. After making historical searches, period newspapers appear to show multiple possible matches for J.A. Johnston in Pennsylvania at the time.

The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish is preserved. The action is excellent. Shiny bright bore with strong rifling. Fine grips. Markings are clear. Visible numbers match.
