Description:
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! .....53 cal, 36” barrel with a bright excellent bore. SN 3033...The barreled action of this attractive rifle retains about 92% original blue showing some areas of light oxidation nearer the muzzle and mild drifting to gray-brown patina under bright light. The rear barrel band shows a little touched-up finish over pinprick pitting that is rather unobtrusive while the middle band retains 95% original bright blue and the triggerguard and bolt handle assembly retain about 90% original bright blue with some scattered areas of old oxidation. The underhammer retains most of its nice vibrant case-hardened colors, the buttplate shows streaks of blue flaking to a nice smooth gray-brown patina and many of the screw heads show brilliant fire blue. The upper tang shows strong Greene patent mark and there is a single “S” stamp at the barrel breech. The smooth walnut stock rates near excellent showing a few thin slivers along the ramrod channel and some mild abrasions around the front band otherwise retaining good oil finish and nice fit throughout. A trumpet-shaped ramrod is present along with a quality reproduction sling, bore brush in butt trap and an original JDG-inspected socket bayonet which is mostly a mottled gray patina showing some cleaned pinprick to light pitting. A handful of these rifles were purchased by U.S. ordnance giving this rifle the distinction of being the first bolt action breechloader technically adopted by the U.S. military. An excellent example for the antique US arms collector.
