Description:
Offered for sale is an exceptionally rare James MacNaughton 20 gauge Scottish boxlock non?ejector, dating to approximately **1912**, and representing one of the most difficult categories of British sporting guns to find today: a true smallbore Scottish made game gun in high original condition, complete with its original maker’s case.

James MacNaughton of Edinburgh was among Scotland’s most elite and least prolific gunmakers. MacNaughton production was extremely limited even during the firm’s peak, and surviving smallbore examples- particularly 20 gauge guns are genuinely scarce. These guns were built for discerning Scottish sportsmen and officers and are prized today for their elegance, light weight, and distinctive national character.

This example is built on a finely proportioned boxlock action with double triggers and a solid concave smooth rib, and is fitted with 28-inch barrels chambered for 2 3/4-inch cartridges. The barrels are choked Improved Cylinder (right) and Light Modified (left), making the gun exceptionally versatile for upland hunting. The gun weighs a remarkably light 5 lbs. 13 oz., ideal for long days in the field.

The shotgun is stocked with an elegant English straight hand grip stock, measuring 14 1/2 inches length of pull, with 1 1/2 inches drop at comb, 2 inches drop at heel, and 1/8 inch cast off. Handling is lively, responsive, and quintessentially Scottish in feel.

Condition is outstanding for a gun of this age. The metal retains strong original blue, the engraving remains sharp and well defined, and the bores are bright and clean. The wood shows excellent grain with an original hand rubbed appearance and honest, minimal handling marks. Of particular note is the presence of the original leather James MacNaughton maker’s case with intact label, along with period straps and vintage tools-a feature that dramatically enhances collector value.

An engraved stock oval bearing the motto “VINCERE VEL MORI” (Conquer or Die) is present, consistent with Scottish family crests of the period. Reported provenance suggests possible ownership by Captain Hector McNeil of the 92nd Gordon Highlanders, which aligns with known MacNaughton clientele. While formal documentation would be required for confirmation, the association is historically plausible and adds significant interest.

Scottish smallbore boxlocks from premier makers such as MacNaughton and Dickson are increasingly sought after by advanced collectors, particularly when found in original configuration and complete with case. This shotgun represents an opportunity to acquire a true Scottish classic that stands well apart from more commonly encountered London-made guns.
