You are looking at an excellent condition, factory original, 2nd year for smoothbore’s, Winchester Model 61 (For Shot Only), Mfg. 1941, caliber 22 long rifle, 24” round BBL, exceptional bore.  Has the correct 17 groove fore-end and checkered steel butt plate.  The first year for smoothbores was 1940 according to Schwing’s book. This Winchester Model 61 (For Shot Only) is 10.5” Winchester counter bored which is correct and the bore diameter measures .265 correct at the muzzle with a #81 front bead sight and no rear sight.   This beautiful Model 61 “For Shot Only” rifle has the extremely rare “Matt Top Receiver” and  It has the correct "W" stamped on the bottom of the trigger guard which is correct for these matted top shot model 61's.  The Winchester proof mark is correctly factory positioned to the left of the matted top.  The matted top was to help reduce glare for the shooter. Stock set is in great condition with a very few minor handling marks on rear stock only, has the correct 17 groove fore-end.  Bluing is fantastic on this rifle. Summary information on this rifle: Bore is excellent Bluing and walnut wood set in excellent shape, very few handling marks Correct rare 10.5” Winchester counter bored and a .265 bore diameter.  Confirmed this with several model 61 collectors Extremely rare matt top receiver on the “For Shot Only” model Correct Winchester proof marks and positioned correctly Has period correct factory tapped upper tang A wonderful and rare piece to add to any personal Winchester collection.   This rifle was manufactured in 1941.
