Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Gold Plated, Engraved and Factory Lettered Colt “New Line” .41 Caliber Rimfire Revolver made in 1874 in Hartford, Connecticut. This handy little 5-shot Colt, referred to as the “Big Colt” when it came out, carried quite the punch for a pocket self-defense revolver. The large caliber of this variation makes it the most desirable of the “New Lines” with approximately 10,702 manufactured from 1874-1879 due to the short production run. This revolver was designed to be a small but potent self-defense revolver for stowing in one’s pocket in the 19th Century. Spur Trigger manufacture was fierce during this time, and Colt struggled to compete against the countless small shops making very similar, less expensive revolvers, though not necessarily of the same quality. The Colt remained a steady, reliable force in firearms for much longer than the rest.
The New Line series of revolvers, including all calibers, was a single action pocket revolver introduced by the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1873 and continued through 1884. Two years after the Colt House Revolver, a year after the Colt Open Top, and almost simultaneously alongside the Colt Peacemaker, the Colt New Line was one of the first metallic cartridge, rear-loading revolvers manufactured by Colt. With such a limited number of examples and the larger caliber, this is a very desirable firearm for a Colt collector.
The included factory letter lists the revolver in .41 caliber with blue and casehardened finish and varnished rosewood grips when shipped to Schuyler, Hartley & Graham in New York on May 20, 1874, as part of a 74 gun shipment. Schuyler, Hartley & Graham was the largest firearms dealer in the United States in 1860. Jacob Rutsen Schuyler (1816-1887), Marcellus Hartley (1828-1902) and Malcolm Graham (1832-1899) incorporated their company on March 1, 1854. In 1876 Schuyler retired from the company and by 1880 they changed the name to Hartley and Graham.
The overall condition is nearing fine. Some original finishes are preserved sharing space with a bright gray patina. Excellent action. The bore is bright with a few spots of pitting and sharp rifling. Crisp engravings. Markings are legible. Visible numbers match.
