SMITH British FLINTLOCK Coat Pistol 1750s-60s Handgun with SILVER GROTESQUE MASK Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique British Flintlock Coat/Pocket Pistol, made circa the mid-18th Century. This pistol has a fairly small frame and a heavy barrel. Then as now, rifles and muskets were the primary arm of the day, useful for everything from hunting to combat. Pistols were certainly not as numerous but still very useful for combat since most firearms at this time were limited to a single shot. Imagine if one discharged their single shot firearm only to miss or have another enemy close the distance. A man expecting trouble might carry as many pistols on his person as he could. According to some estimates, European rifles were made at a ratio of 250:1 over pistols, making these rare and highly coveted. This example has a large .58 caliber bore, which would be a great deterrent to a “ne’er do well” looking at the barrel pointing at his chest. The smaller flintlocks, such as this one, is what would be carried in the busy streets of Paris or London in the pocket or coat of a stately gentleman during the tumultuous times of the mid-1700’s in Western Europe. The overall condition is good. Strong action. Original flintlock. The bore is in good shape for its age. The right side of the forend has a split. The grip is in very good shape. Lightly carved wrist. Lock markings are worn, but discernable. This example would fit into and display well in any 18th century collection! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7-1/4 inches. Caliber: .58 Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
