Description:
1877-79 mfg. Antique EVANS “NEW MODEL” .44 Lever Action REPEATING Rifle

SCARCE Maine 28-Round Repeater BUFFALO BILL CODY

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Evans New Model Rifle produced by the Evans Repeating Rifle Company of Mechanics Falls, Maine. Frequently referred to as “one of the most novel repeating rifles of the 19th century”, this .44 caliber centerfire carbine was manufactured between 1877 and 1879. Over the lifespan of the company between 1873 and 1879 there were under 15,000 total rifles made in all models with approximately 3000 of the “Sporting” models produced before the company went out of business in 1879, making this configuration fairly rare in comparison to the other models that preceded it.

This long gun was designed and patented in 1868 by Warren R. Evans, a dentist by trade, along with his brother George. After designing his weapon, Evans set up the Evans Repeating Rifle Company for the sole purpose of manufacturing this particular firearm in 1873 and set about marketing his weapon to the U.S. Army as he thought they would be interested in using a weapon of that type. But the weapon failed a dust test, resulting in the Army rejecting the weapon outright. Not wanting his weapon to go to waste, Evans set about marketing his weapon to civilians, where he saw a moderate amount of success. Several famous shooters, such as Kit Carson Jr. and Buffalo Bill Cody, both thought highly of the rifle.

The Evans Repeater has gained renewed popularity over the past decade, largely due to its portrayal as a legendary lever-action rifle in Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption 2. Top results in online searches mostly focus on its role in the game rather than the actual firearm itself. In the game, it’s a coveted weapon that highlights the period-accurate detail and functionality, elevating its status in popular culture as a symbol of the rugged, lawless American frontier, and inspiring admiration among ‘Westerns’ and gaming fans.

The overall condition is nearing fine. Original dark brown patina is preserved. Some surface pitting is present on the barrel and frame. The action is smooth and crisp. Bright bore with strong rifling. Markings are legible. Solid buttsock. The forend has been refinished and is missing a sliver on the right side. The lever latch is absent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
