Blued barrel, color casehardened frame, iron furniture, blued screws, smooth, straight gripped walnut stock. Single shot percussion tip down barrel breechloading carbine with three leaf rear sight, pinched blade front sight and saddle ring on the reverse of the receiver. Standard three-line Massachusetts Arms Company marking on lower right of receiver and standard patent markings on lower left. Serial number on lower tang, along with 1865 date. Two clear and correct script cartouches on reverse wrist, both the JM of James Mills. The Maynard Carbine was one of the most successful breechloading percussion carbines of the American Civil War, due to its simple and robust design. Slightly more than 20,000 were delivered between 1863 and 1865 with many of the guns seeing use with Indiana Volunteer Cavalry Regiments, including the 6th, 9th & 11th. The Maynard was also issued to the 11th Tennessee Cavalry CONDITION: Very Fine. Bore fine and partly bright with strong rifling and some scattered oxidation. Barrel with much of the blue intact, with some thinning and dulling. Frame with weak traces of mottled case colors and a mostly mottled gray patina. Metal with freckled oxidation scattered throughout, some very minor surface roughness and a couple of small patches of minor surface rust. Markings clear throughout. Mechanically strong functional action.
