Description:
Jim Levack was a veteran of the First World War that, after winning numerous shooting championships, became a member of the U.S. rifle team in 1935 and eventually an exhibition shooter for Winchester. During the period of the 1930s when exhibition shooting was wildly popular, Levack did many of the typical tricks such as shooting the center of a washer with a rifle or throwing a handful of objects in the air and hitting them all before they hit the ground. However, one trick that set him apart was his form of golf. It’s said he played with a .44 caliber rifle. His tee 'shots' traveled up to 200 yards, and he 'blasted' out of sand traps with the greatest of ease. He used a rifle butt for putting. It is very possible that this carbine is that very rifle and may have been a part of hundreds of Levack's exhibitions. It has standard markings along with Levack's initials "J.G.L" engraved in script on the right of the receiver and "Jim Levack" engraved in script on the buttplate. Fitted with pinned blade front and folding ladder rear sights. Features finely figured checkered curly maple forearm and matching buttstock with a carbine buttplate. Fine condition overall retaining 98% period applied chrome plating on the receiver and 80% original blue finish on the barrel and magazine with the hammer, lever and buttplate mostly a plum brown patina. The wood is very good with scattered minor dings and scratches, well-defined checkering, and retains most of the varnish. Mechanically excellent. A very attractive and historic Winchester attributed to notorious factory exhibition shooter to add to your collection.
