Marlin’s First Smokeless Powder Rifle Pre-Bullseye

Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R J.M. Marlin Model 93 Carbine chambered in .30-30 Winchester, made circa 1920 in New Haven, Connecticut. Marlin Firearms was founded in the 1870s by John Marlin and was one of Winchester’s biggest competitors for the lever action market in the late-19th and into the 20th Century. Marlin produced a large assortment of firearms such as lever-action rifles, pump-action shotguns and single shot rifles. The Model 1893 represents Marlin’s first smokeless powder lever action rifle. It features a solid top frame with side ejection and a smooth action. The barrel is a round medium weight of 20 inches, chambered in the .30-30 WIN cartridge. The magazine tube is a 2/3 length variation that was desired by some for the way it balanced!

The Model 1893 and its successors found particular favor in Canada, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest, where precipitation combined with cold temperatures sometimes caused top-eject designs to freeze solid. During the Klondike Gold Rush, the solid-top Marlin design was preferred by many prospectors facing subzero temperatures and dangerous animals, since the solid top frame was better at keeping freezing rain, snow and dirt out of the operating parts of the action.

The overall condition is fine. Much original finish is preserved, including blue finish and case colors. Excellent crisp action. Bright bore maintains strong rifling. Markings are legible. This example sports a solid stock and forend with average handling marks and wear. Nice grain and colors contrast in the stock!
