Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Here we present an antique Sharps and Hankins Model 1862 Army Carbine manufactured circa 1864 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is an extremely scarce carbine with only 500 of the “Army” variants produced. Sharps & Hankins produced three variants of their carbine, those being the Navy (6686 produced), the Army (500 produced), and the Short Cavalry (1000 produced). Made from 1862-65, the bulk of production was the more numerous Navy Carbine was still only just over 8,000 were produced. The Sharps & Hankins 1862 Army Carbine is one of the scarcest Civil War carbines encountered. Of the 500 produced, only 200 were ordered by the U.S. Army. This example displays a “tinned” finish, which was reportedly used on a limited trial basis. This finish is sometimes found on the shorter, and somewhat more common, cavalry carbines. The shape of the carbine is distinctly Sharps and operates a bit differently than other carbines of the era. The trigger guard doubles as a lever, which is opened by pressing a small tab inside the smaller loop of the lever. Opening the lever slides the barrel away from the recoil shield for loading and unloading. It has a great elevating rear sight and brass butt-plate. The overall condition is fine. Tinned finish. The stock has been varnished. The markings are worn and remain legible. Excellent action. The bore is very bright with sharp rifling. Markings are legible. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 24 inches. Caliber: .52 Rimfire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
