Description:
EXTREMELY RARE MARLIN 1895 .33 C.F. CALIBER (.33WCF) TAKEDOWN LIGHT RIFLE, #338XXX, MADE 1906. Winchester introduced the .33 WCF smokeless cartridge in their lightweight Model 1886 in 1902. The .33 WCF is simply the .45-70 case necked to .338” and was considered one of the most powerful lever action cartridges of the time. It became immediately popular and it dominated 1886 production until the model was discontinued.  Marlin followed suit with their big Model 1895 made just like the M-1886 with shotgun butt, half magazine and 24” round barrel as standard features. Like the ‘86 some were solid frame and some takedown. For whatever reason, Marlin made very few 1895 rifles in all variations and very few lightweight smokeless .33s. Interestingly, the barrel is marked “.33 C.F.” without the “W” for Winchester. Why promote the competition? This example still retains some case color mainly on the left side and top of the receiver with most of the receiver a mottled gray/brown. About all the blue remains on the mag tube and barrel with excellent markings and original buckhorn rear sight mated with the original Rocky Mountain blade front sight. Excellent stock and forearm of matching color walnut. Marlin embossed hard rubber butt plate. Tight takedown, action, strong safety half-cock and bright excellent bore. I called the Cody Museum on this one and as seems typical for late .33 caliber rifles, the serial number was a blank in the records. A super rare 120 year old Marlin. These just never seem to turn up.
