Description: Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer revolver, also known as the Colt Root Revolver after engineer Elisha K. Root, .28 caliber, SN: 9494, representing Colt's first solid-frame, spur-trigger design produced between 1855-1870. Distinctive Sidehammer configuration with loading lever beneath the 3-1/2 inch barrel, inverted cone front sight, and notch rear sight cut into the top strap. Serial number "9494" appears on the cylinder with matching number under the barrel and butt. Roll engraved cylinder scene. Fitted with smooth walnut grips. Complete in original/period mahogany presentation case with red velvet lining and compartmentalized interior, containing Eley Bros London percussion cap tin, powder flask with embossed eagle surmounting crossed revolvers, bullet mold marked "COLT'S PATENT", combination screwdriver/tool, and key, representing a complete set as supplied by Colt. Condition: VG original finish with moderate handling wear and fading as one might expect from a pocket revolver that saw fairly frequent use and is now 175 years old. Mechanism will need tuning as cylinder rotation upon cocking is incomplete, each cylinder needing a nudge for proper indexing. The hammer return spring is also weak-when muzzle is pointed up, the trigger requires a nudge forward to keep the hammer cocked. Single piece grip retains most of its original varnish with a scattering of handling marks and a noticeable dent at the leading edge of butt. Comparable condition accessories, all of which show moderate wear/handing, especially the screwdriver/tool. The case itself retains the vast majority of its finish, the lined interior with expected scuffs and stains. Price: $4,995.00 Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Colt Model: Model 1855 Serial Number: 9494 Caliber Info: 0.28 Condition: VG |
