Apparrently made as a B ritish contrat musket possible used in this country,This musket appears to be in the original flint though there is a slight gap in the lockplate fit and it may have been re-stocked during the period of use in this country. The metal surfaces show an old cleaning mostly toned to a mix of gunmetal and gray-brown patina with scattered old oxidation and light pitting. There are no apparent maker markings along the barrel though the breech shows period London proofs and the lockplate is engraved in the center with maker’s name “BECKWITH” and decorated with a simple double borderline. The lock is rather utilitarian with martial-style cock, a rather large bridled frizzen and frizzen spring with simple chiseled extension. The mainspring and rear lock screw are more modern replacements and the inside edge of the lockplate, the frizzen and the internal parts show matching “III” assembly hash marks. The fittings are brass consisting of the nosecap, flared ramrod thimbles, tailpipe, triggerguard with vague acorn finial, buttplate and simple lock screw washers. The brass has mostly toned to a mild ocher patina and the triggerguard tang shows a thin crack through one of the screw holes but this is relatively unobtrusive. The walnut stock rates about good showing an older added finish, scattered dings and a number of well-executed repairs along the edges. \. A rather undersized tulip-shaped iron ramrod is present and the lock seems to function well mechanically Breech of barrel has a crown over a V and CP? Looks much like a sencond model Brown Bess.
