Description:
EARLY 1895 FLATSIDE RIFLE IN RARE .40-72 CALIBER WITH SPECIAL OCTAGON BARREL, #3XXX, MADE 1897. Only about the first 5,000 1895s were made with the flatside receiver- this was approx. the first two full years of manufacture. After this time the more familiar scalloped frame became standard. The standard caliber from the beginning of production was .30-40 Krag with the two “black powder” cartridges offered in .38-70 and .40-72. By far the most rare is the .40-72. Both of these were discontinued in 1910. Further, the octagon barrel was offered as a special option only for the .38-72 and .40-72 calibers. Exactly how many flatside .40-72 octagon rifles were made is not clear, but the number was small. This example shows some good blue on the magazine sides, some thinning blue on the bolt and mostly gray on the balance. The correct tapered 26” oct. barrel shows very aged and thin blue mixing brown. Buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and Lyman half-moon/bead front sight. Exc. markings on the barrel and tang. Buttstock is fine with only light handling marks and does have an old sling swivel hole- easy to fill or better yet, just put a period type swivel in. The forend is solid showing normal light handling, without a swivel hole and has the correct ebony wedge inlay in the schnable tip. Wood to metal fit is tight. Action is tight, strong hammer spring, half cock is a little weak but holds. The bore is excellent being only very slightly dark with strong rifling and any corrosion too surface and minor to describe. For a black powder cartridge in a rifle that has seen real hunting use, this is a surprisingly excellent bore! A true nearly 129 year old Winchester rarity.
