Description:
Fine WWI Period DWM Model P.08 German Luger w/2 Matching Magazines
This is a highly desirable 1918-dated DWM (Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken) P.08 Luger pistol, a classic World War I-era German military sidearm chambered in 9mm Parabellum with a standard 4-inch barrel. Dated 1918 with two matching magazines just acquired from a prestigious collection and offered by Hansen & Hansen the oldest firearms dealer in Connecticut. Acquired decades ago, it was obtained from the individual who is the longtime editor of the German luger section of Fjestad's Blue Book of Gun Values. This specimen with 4" barrel is ALL ORIGINAL and in exceptional condition.
Produced toward the end of the war, these late-production DWM Lugers often exhibit excellent craftsmanship despite wartime pressures. The serial number 4644d places it in the typical range for 1918 military issues, which commonly feature letter suffixes.
Serial number 4644d the pistol retains 87-90% plus original blue overall. It retains almost all of its straw colors in appropriate places as well as fire blue on parts. The two magazines have correct wooden thumbpieces marked with the matching serial numbers on each bases. Bore is excellent. Certainly this luger would occupy a lofty place in any luger collection. Along with the pistol will be included a documentation letter from Hansen & Hansen denoting its provenance from the former personage.
Key highlights of this specimen include:
  • All-original condition with 87-90%+ remaining original blued finish — exceptional for a over-100-year-old wartime pistol, where wear from service is common.
  • Retains nearly full straw-colored small parts (from heat-treatment hardening) and fire-blued components.
  • Excellent bore indicates minimal use or careful preservation.
  • Comes with two original matching magazines — both with wooden base plugs correctly serial-numbered to 4644d. Dual matching mags are rare and substantially increase value, as most surviving examples have mismatched or replacement magazines.
Hansen & Hansen Arms & Antiquities in Southport, Connecticut, is a long-established dealer (operating for decades, with roots in cartridge and firearms sales) specializing in high-grade antique and collectible firearms, military items, and historical pieces. They have a reputation in the collector community for handling investment-quality rarities.
The pistol's chain of ownership traces back decades to a prominent figure: the longtime contributing editor for the German Luger section in S.P. Fjestad's Blue Book of Gun Values (the industry's standard reference for firearm valuations and identification).
Late WWI DWM Lugers in this condition — fully original, high finish retention, and dual matching mags are prized among advanced collectors. They represent one of the iconic handguns of the 20th century, known for elegant toggle-lock design and historical significance as the primary German officer's sidearm in both world wars.
This example would indeed stand out in any serious Luger collection, potentially commanding a premium due to its rarity and condition. L535
