Description:
Classic Antique “Southerner” .41RF Derringer Pistol
Offered here for sale is a fine and classic collectible antique American single shot pistol known as the “Southerner” derringer. The Southerner Derringer is chambered in .41 rimfire (specifically the .41 Short Rimfire cartridge). It was manufactured by the Brown Manufacturing Company in Newburyport, Massachusetts, after the company reorganized from its predecessor, Merrimack Arms & Manufacturing Co., in 1869. The design was patented on April 9, 1867, and it was marketed as the "Southerner" to appeal to Southern buyers in the post-Civil War era, despite being made in New England.
These pistols were popular concealable "gambler's" or pocket guns due to their compact size (about 5 inches overall, with a 2½-inch octagonal barrel) and simple construction. They typically featured a brass or iron frame, walnut or rosewood grips, a spur trigger, and a blued or nickel-plated barrel. Total production across both companies was around 16,500 units from approximately 1867 to 1873.
The Brown Mfg. Co. portion of production ran from 1869 to 1873, with about 10,000 units made (following Merrimack's earlier ~6,500). Serial number 8246 falls within the Brown Manufacturing era and aligns with production around 1870–1871.
This specimen being is in fine working condition although showing wear has a very nice grey patina to barrel and brass frame. The grips are sound although there is a small gouge around grip screw area.
How It Operates
The Southerner uses a simple break-open, pivoting-barrel mechanism (often called a "side-swing" or "turn-barrel" action.  Pressing the small button/release lever on the underside of the frame (behind the trigger). This unlocks the barrel, allowing it to pivot sideways to the right (or left, depending on orientation). Insert a single .41 rimfire cartridge into the chamber.
The .41 Short Rimfire cartridge was low-powered (130-grain bullet at ~425 fps, ~53 ft-lbs energy), suitable only for very close-range self-defense.
A fine American 19th century collectible firearm.
