The Hartford Arms Co. New No. 2 is an antique spur-trigger revolver that was manufactured during the late 19th century, typically around the 1870s. These revolvers were designed primarily for the .32 rimfire (RF) cartridge, which was a common round at the time for small, easily concealed pocket revolvers.
Hartford Arms Co. and the New No. 2 Model:
- Hartford Arms Co. was a company based in Hartford, Connecticut. It is best known for manufacturing inexpensive, small-frame revolvers aimed at the mass market. They were a significant player in the trade of firearms during the post-Civil War era, especially when demand for cheap, easily concealable handguns was high.
- The New No. 2 model was one of the most popular revolvers produced by the Hartford Arms Co. It was a single-action revolver with a spur trigger, meaning that it required the shooter to manually pull back the hammer before firing, and it had a small, compact design suitable for self-defense or as a “pocket gun.”
- The spur trigger design is a distinctive feature of this revolver. The design was often criticized for being less safe than other trigger mechanisms, but it was common on inexpensive revolvers at the time. Spur-trigger revolvers also tended to be lighter and easier to carry, making them popular choices for concealed carry.
- The .32 rimfire cartridge was a low-powered, small-caliber round popular in the 19th century. It was relatively inexpensive and often used in small revolvers like the Hartford Arms Co. New No. 2. While not as powerful as centerfire cartridges, the .32 RF was used for personal defense, especially in areas where concealed carry was legal and popular.
- Hartford Arms Co. didn’t just sell under its own name. The company produced revolvers under different trade names for various wholesalers and retailers. This was a common practice in the 19th century, as manufacturers often produced guns for third parties to sell under their brand. These guns might have minor variations but were essentially the same product.
General Features:
- Caliber: .32 rimfire (RF)

Historical Context:
- The revolver would have been produced during the post-Civil War era, a time when there was an increased demand for personal defense weapons. Concealed carry laws were more relaxed than today, and many civilians felt the need to protect themselves, especially in cities or unsettled regions. Revolvers like the Hartford Arms New No. 2 were marketed as a compact, reliable choice for everyday carry.
