Description:
FRONTIER Era J. BACH Retailed Antique SLOTTER & CO. Percussion PLAINS Rifle

SAN FRANCISCO Retailer Marked CIVIL WAR ERA Longarm

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique J. Bach Retailer Marked Slotter & Company Half Stock Percussion Rifle made circa the 1860s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Slotter & Company was a Philadelphia manufacturer formed by the Schlotterbeck brothers, former employees of Henry Deringer, and manufactured Deringer style pistols, “plains rifles,” and other firearms in Philadelphia from 1860 until 1871 and was known for supplying guns for the western arms dealers, especially for the California dealers, including John Bach of 72 Commercial Street in San Francisco circa 1858-1865.

The percussion rifle was a type of rifle that utilized the percussion lock mechanism to fire a bullet or musket ball. The Percussion lock mechanism was an evolution of the flintlock mechanism used on earlier muskets and rifles, with the percussion rifle being introduced somewhere around 1820. The percussion rifle had a slight advantage when it came to rate of fire over its flintlock counterparts. The use of a percussion cap reduced the reloading time, meaning the average number of shots per minute would consistently fall between three and four per minute. The percussion lock was also very reliable in wet conditions, and the reverse is true for the flintlocks with the primer not being affected by having water in contact with it, while the powder was virtually incapable of being exposed to water.

The overall condition is very good. Dark patinaed barrel and lock. The refinished stock is very good with minimal wear and a thin stable crack in the left forend. Repaired toe. The markings are legible. Excellent action. Deep checkering on the wrist. This example is marked “SLOTTER & Co PHILA” on the lock and “SLOTTER & Co PHILA MADE FOR J. BACH SAN FRANCo CALA” on the barrel.
