STANDARD ISSUE for the MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR!
Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Robert Johnson Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol, dated 1841 in Middletown, Connecticut. This .54 caliber smoothbore flintlock pistol is one of approximately 18,000 Model 1836 pistols manufactured by Robert Johnson in Middletown. The Model 1836 was widely considered to be one of the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistols of its era. The pistol has an 8-1/2-inch round barrel with a brass front sight blade, swivel ramrod with button head and iron mountings.
Many of these firearms saw heavy use during the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, often carried in U.S. cavalry holsters. The breech of the barrel is partially stamped with “US/JH/P” (with the “S” only partially visible). The case-hardened lock bears the inscription “US/R.JOHNSON/MIDDn CONN/1841.” Additionally, two oval script inspection cartouches “JH” and “W.A.T” (William Anderson Thornton) are clearly stamped on the left flat of the stock.
The overall condition is fine. The lock assembly retains its original vibrant case colors. The original flintlock delivers exceptional action, complemented by a brilliantly bright, smooth bore. Legible, defined markings. This outstanding example features a solid stock with crisp, well-defined edges and remarkably sharp cartouches, making it a true standout for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Here is a great example of a superb flintlock Johnson Pistol that has survived the test of time!
