Description:
Scarce BRITISH WAR DEPARTMENT Marked CIVIL WAR Era Antique STARR Carbine

1 of 5,002 Carbines; U.S. and BRITISH INSPECTED

Here we present an antique Starr Arms Co. Rimfire Model Falling Block Saddle Ring Carbine, made circa 1865 in Yonkers, New York. According to Flayderman’s Guide (9th Edition, 9B-099), 5,002 of the rimfire cartridge Starr carbines were ordered by the U.S. Government and delivered between March and May of 1865. In addition to the U.S. inspection initials and cartouche stamps on the left stock wrist, this example has a British War Department “broad arrow/WD” and numbers stamped on the stock. As these rimfire variants were made right at the end of the Civil War, many of them were unissued and like new. The British War Department acquired about 1,000 of these, most of which were issued for duty on ships in the Great Lakes on the border of the US and Canada, as well as around Halifax. This was in response to the Fenian Raids, raids perpetrated by Irishmen from the US who were attempting to wrest control of Canada so that they could get the British to leave Ireland. A fascinating piece from a fascinating and somewhat lesser known period in history!

The overall condition is near fine. Original blue finish and trace case colors on the receiver and lock. The markings are legible. Solid stock and forend are good with expected handling wear. Three cartouches on the left wrist. The bore is bright and sharply rifled. The action is strong. “W.D.” Stamped on the right buttstock and “37” marked on the left.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 21 inches.

Caliber: .52 Spencer Rimfire

Overall condition as seen in photos.
