Description:
Antique German Mauser 71/84 Infantry Rifle - 11mm Mauser - Historic Military Relic
German Mauser Model 71/84 – The First Mauser Repeater – 11mm Mauser – C&R Eligible Antique
For sale is a significant piece of firearms history: a German Mauser Model 71/84 infantry rifle, chambered in 11mm Mauser (43 Mauser). Serial number 15872 (barrel & receiver), produced at the Amberg Arsenal. This rifle is offered in fair, "as-found" condition, consistent with its age of over 100 years. It is a non-numbers-matching example and comes with an original leather sling. Please read the full condition description carefully. This is a legitimate antique (pre-1899) and is not considered a modern firearm.
The M71/84 represents a pivotal evolution in military technology. It is Germany's first infantry repeater, built on the foundation of the single-shot Model 1871 but featuring a new design with an 8-round tubular magazine under the barrel. This rifle bridged the gap between the black powder single-shot era and the coming age of smokeless powder and box magazines. Although quickly rendered obsolete by the French Lebel in 1886, the M71/84 saw service with German Navy, reserve, and rear-echelon units through WWI, and many were exported to South America.
Condition Disclosure: This rifle shows extensive honest wear. The wood stock is in poor condition, having seen far better days with significant drying, checking, and handling marks. The metal surfaces exhibit wear, patina, and scattered pitting throughout. A notable mechanical issue: the lever that switches between single-shot and magazine-fed mode is stuck in the single-shot position. The rifle can be operated as a single-shot. The bore condition is unknown. This is a project for the advanced collector, a display piece for the historian, or a candidate for careful, sympathetic restoration. It was also the model of rifle prominently featured in the film "The Last Samurai" (though we cannot confirm this specific rifle's provenance in the film).
