Description:
Scarce Square Butt Colt Detective Special, with Archive Letter. This revolver remains in very good condition. The original finish still retains much of its deep dark shine with some signs of normal use and carry. The cylinder face, recoil shield, and forcing cone are all very clean. The action is crisp, the lock up is tight, and the bore is clean with strong lands and grooves. The factory walnut grips are excellent. A Colt Archive Letter is also included showing a manufacturing and shipping date of July 1941 to John J. Tobler of Union City, New Jersey, a dealer who supplied many local law enforcement agencies. Price includes shipping CONUS.

History:
In early 1933 (around serial number 415000) Colt changed the shape of thier grip frame on the Detective Special from "square" to "round". The U.S. Army selected the Detective Special as the primary sidearm for their special operations personnel during WWII. Prior to WWII, however, various military units had begun to acquire the model in small quantities. Detective Specials aquired by the Army were standard "civilian production" in all respects except for the ordnance requirement for a square butt grip frame. Since all previous military sidearms had square butt designs, the military did not want to change "the feel" of thier handguns.

Why is this example "Scarce"?
It's quite unusual to find a square butt Detective Special from this time period (mid 1941) that was shipped to a private/commercial distributor, since the military configuration was limited to special government contracts and purchase orders.
