Description:
Frontier SHARPS Model 1874 Heavy Octagonal Barrel BUFFALO Rifle SET TRIGGER

“OLD RELIABLE” Bridgeport Chambered for .40-90 (2 5/8”)

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Frontier Issued Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Model Heavy Barrel Single Shot “Buffalo Rifle” made circa 1877 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The hunting of the American Bison or buffalo had its heyday in the 1870s and 80s. The professional hunters used powerful single shot breech-loading rifles to do much of their business. One of the most prolific rifles used was the legendary Sharps Model 1874. All of the Model 1874 Sharps were chambered for .40, 44, 45 and 50 calibers, but the chamber lengths varied. The .40 caliber rifles could be chambered for both bottleneck and straight cases. In the early years, .44-77 was the most common chambering. In 1876 the factory changed location from Hartford, Connecticut to Bridgeport in the same state. In the Bridgeport era most rifles were chambered in .45-70, making this example scarcer.

The overall condition is very good. Original patina. Period shortened barrel, likely to make this heavy barreled rifle much more portable and handy. The stock and forend are original with a split on the right side of the forend and expected handling wear throughout. Patent markings on the left side are legible. The action is excellent. The bore is bright and has sharp rifling. “Old Reliable” and the Sharps Bridgeport address is on top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight, with “40 Calibre” and “2 5/8” on top of the breech.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 20 inches.

Caliber: .40 2-5/8” (aka .40-90)

Overall condition as seen in photos.
