We wish to help you improve your collection and make both parties happy. Description: This Peabody rifle chambered in .45-70 Govt. is a Connecticut contract rifle. It is one of only 2,000 that were ordered by the Connecticut State Guard in 1871 -1872. After being rebarreled for Connecticut into 45-70, this rifle has the correct modified rear sight. Later, in 1896, many of these were purchased by military surplus dealer Francis Bannerman of New York. They were found in their 1903 catalog. In a 1907 catalog, shows these rifles to be altered to a 30" "Cadet Size". (Flayderman's Guide, p.631) Note: With its 33" barrel, this is a rifle that survived Francis Bannerman's reconditioning. Please see pictures for significant details. The underside of the buttstock's plate is marked "CONN 795." This rifle is in very good condition considering its age. The metal is a mostly brown patina. The stock appears to have its original finish with typical handling marks. It is structurally sound. There is a 1 1/8" hairline crack in the foreend on the left side way at the top in the barrel channel. This crack will have no concerns with structure, safety, or function. This can be seen in the rear sight picture. We find the rifling of this barrel to be in extremely nice condition with Alexander Henry rifling. The cleaning rod is correct; please note the two holes. This is a great example of a historic rifle. We accept USPS Money Order, cashier’s check, or credit card for immediate shipping. Please note credit card sales are subject to an additional 3% fee.
