Offered here is a highly scarce double action J.M. Cooper 1st Model Navy Revolver, manufactured circa 1864, chambered in .36 caliber, and representing a fascinating chapter of Civil War–era American arms making. This revolver is clearly patterned after the Colt 1851 Navy, a design that was in tremendous demand following the destructive Colt factory fire, which left the market scrambling for proven, familiar sidearms. Arms makers like J.M. Cooper stepped in to fill that void, producing revolvers that closely followed the legendary 1851 profile while incorporating their own ideas—and Cooper went a step further. Unlike the Colt original, this revolver features a remarkably uncommon double-action mechanism- rarely seen in the realm of open top percussion revolvers of this time period.

The result is a revolver that blends recognizable Colt Navy handling and balance with a rare and mechanically intriguing action, offering collectors something far beyond a standard contractor copy. With limited production and strong historical context tied directly to wartime shortages and industrial disruption, this Cooper is a true “gap-filler” revolver of the Civil War era. For the advanced collector, this is a reference-worthy piece—a revolver that tells the story of demand, innovation, and adaptation during one of the most pivotal periods in American firearms history. Opportunities to acquire a J.M. Cooper 1st Model Navy are few and far between, making this an exceptional chance to own a genuinely rare alternative to the iconic Colt 1851.
