Description:
New Years Special Fine U.S.Property Mkd Enfield No.4 Mk1 .303 Rifle
Offered here for sale is a very collectible WWII 1942 dated British Enfield No. 4 Mk I .303 standard British military rifle. Serial number L7c3175 this specimen is all original and although showing use consistent with military usage it is in sound condition. It is stamped U.S. PROPERTY which indicates manufacture in U.S.
The Lee–Enfield No. 4 Mk I was the standard British infantry rifle of the mid–Second World War. It replaced the earlier SMLE (No. 1 Mk III) and was designed for faster mass production while maintaining the Enfield’s hallmark strengths: reliability, accuracy, and a very fast bolt action.
General characteristics
  • Caliber: .303 British
  • Action: Bolt-action, cock-on-closing
  • Magazine: 10-round detachable box (normally loaded with 5-round stripper clips)
  • Role: Standard service rifle of British and Commonwealth forces
British soldiers valued the No. 4 for its durability and the ability to fire rapidly with good accuracy—qualities that played a major role in early and mid-war infantry combat.

A 1942 date places this rifle firmly in the most intense period of WWII production. Britain was rebuilding after Dunkirk and expanding forces worldwide, so rifles were produced under great pressure. During this period machining shortcuts were accepted if they didn’t affect function. Finish quality often varied. Tool marks and simplified components are common and correct.
The “U.S. PROPERTY” stamp is a key historical feature. The rifle was manufactured in the United States under the Lend-Lease program. These rifles were owned by the U.S. government and supplied to Britain. Most were made by Savage Arms (Stevens division) in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts.
With assorted use marks, bumps and scratches it is still a very collectible specimen and well suitable for reenactors without worry in taking it out to the field.
