Description:
HERE IS A GREAT COLT DIAMONDBACK 22LR WITH A 6" BARREL AND IN GREAT CONDITION I THINK MADE IN 1985.

The Colt Diamondback in .22 LR is a
double-action, six-shot revolver produced between 1966 and 1988 (with some sources noting limited production until 1991). Styled after the larger and more expensive Colt Python, it is a highly sought-after collector's firearm known for its ventilated rib, full-length barrel underlug, and adjustable target sights.
Key Specifications
  • Frame: Built on the smaller D-frame (shared with the Detective Special), rather than the Python's I-frame.
  • Caliber: Primary rimfire chambering in .22 LR (also produced in .38 Special).
  • Barrel Lengths: Available in 2.5-inch4-inch, and 6-inch lengths.
  • Capacity: 6-round swing-out cylinder.
  • Finishes: Standard in high-luster blue or nickel. Nickel versions are significantly rarer and typically command a premium price.
Distinguishing Features
  • Grips: 2.5-inch models typically featured "Service" type grips, while 4-inch and 6-inch models were fitted with larger "Target" grips, often made of checkered walnut with Colt medallions.
  • Firing Pin: Unlike the Python’s frame-mounted firing pin, the Diamondback features a fixed firing pin on the hammer.
  • Action: While modeled after the Python, the Diamondback's internal action was generally not hand-tuned to the same "Swiss-watch" level of refinement.
Market and Collectibility in 2026
As of 2026, the Colt Diamondback .22 LR remains a high-value collector's item. Because it has been out of production for decades, prices vary significantly based on condition and rarity:
  • Standard Condition: Used models in 70%–90% condition often sell for $1,100 to $2,500.
  • Collector Grade: Unfired or "New in Box" (NIB) specimens frequently exceed $4,000 to $5,000, with rare nickel or factory-engraved variations reaching $8,000 to $15,000+ at s.
  • Modern Alternatives: While the original Diamondback is no longer manufactured, Colt currently offers the King Cobra Target .22 LR, a modern 10-shot rimfire revolver with similar aesthetics (vent rib and full underlug).
For owners seeking precise production dates, the Colt Serial Number Database can be used to verify manufacturing years.
