According to the Winchester Handbook by George Madis, only 1201 M-1873 rifles were made with longer than the standard 24” barrels. Considering the three calibers of the 1873 (.32-20, .38-40 and .44-40), round, octagon and half-octagon barrels, and lengths to 36” there are a truly limited number of 26” octagon .44-40 caliber rifles manufactured. This example still shows good aged and lightly thinned barrel blue with a buckhorn rear sight and elevation bar that will set the sight higher than usual along with the factory front sight base with a copper blade/bead. The barrel shows excellent markings including the caliber stamping just ahead of the receiver. The mag tube shows more typical gray/brown. The receiver shows an uncleaned and very aged blue mixing heavily brown and gray with deeper blue in the protected areas and on the loading gate. Original dust cover is intact and the brass lifter is uncleaned and retains the sharp .44 CAL marking. Stock and forearm show light handling only with tight wood to metal fit and just a little honest saddle wear ahead of the receiver on the forend. Fine screw heads, tight action, strong hammer spring and safety half-cock. The bore is surprisingly fine+ with good rifling all the way through and only slightly dark with any corrosion scattered and very surface- much better than normally found on these. A rare variation 142 year old Model 1873 .44-40 in attractive and un-messed with condition.
