Savage Stevens 311A – 12 Gauge – 28" Barrels – 1952 Model
The Savage Stevens 311A may have been considered a “utility grade" shotgun when they were in production but, from time to time, you run across a really nice example of one and “utility grade" is not what comes to mind. Our shotgun has no serial number, nor is one required because the shotgun was manufactured before 1968.
Stevens was very inconsistent with markings on a lot of their models and that holds true for the 311A. You can usually find a lettered date code enclosed in a circle somewhere on a Stevens but the location varies. Ours has a “D" date code, which would make this a 1952 model. There are a couple of other stamps that we should call attention to. On the barrel flat and on the underneath side of the forearm are the initials JH. These may be the initials of a Stevens inspector but, more likely, they are from well-known gunsmith J.H. Johnston. Perhaps he worked on this one or maybe even did some type of modification. We also find “17E" inside a circle on the under side of the receiver, just forward of the trigger guard.
The barrels are 28 inches in length and are chambered for 2-3/4 inch shells. A single bead sight sits at the end of the barrels. A two position safety is mounted on the tang. Firing is done by two separate triggers.
The receiver is color case hardened and the finish is still in Excellent shape with little to no finish loss. The wood is in Very Good condition although it does show signs of use, just as we’d expect. The finish on the barrels is Very Good. The bore is clean, the barrels are very bright and the lockup is tight.
If you’re a fan of vintage side-by-side shotguns, this one is an unexpected find. It’s a great looking gun and, please, don’t call it utility grade.
