History if the U.S. Springfield and some general info-
The original U.S. Springfield Mod 1873 was adopted by the U.S. army after the civil war as a cost effective conversion of surplus muzzle-loading muskets into breech loaders. Designed by Eskine Allin, it used a hinged breechblock that flips up for loading a mettalic cartridge. Hence the trapdoor name.
Chambered in .45/70 Govt (a 405 grain bullet over 70 grains of black powder for the infantry load) it became the standard U.S. Infantry rifle from 1873 until replaced by the Krag Jorgenson in 1892. The infantry rifle had the 32.5" barrel for better accuracy and improved velocity with the full 70 grain black powder charge.
