Description:
Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are very proud to offer this fancy version of the rifle that started the fame of John Marlin, a model 1881 deluxe. This big lever action was designed by Andrew Burgess, and is a close cousin of the Whitney Kennedy rifles. It is a traditional top eject frame, and was very well made. The sliding loading gate and single screw through the forend cap are endearing hallmarks of this model. She was designed for the big game cartridges of the era, and this one is chambered in the venerable 38-55 WCF. Made in the year of our Lord 1889, she is in wonderful shape for being 137 years old. The original blue has drifted to a pleasing patina, with edges silvered out. The action is smooth and crisp, and works as designed, including the half cock safety. The bore of the 28 inch octagonal barrel is also good, with plenty of shine and strong rifling. The stampings are clear, and the nicely figured and checkered select walnut is also very good, with few handling marks. The configuration is confirmed by the fine folks at the Cody Museum, and a full letter has been requested and will be included with this fine rifle. We are often asked why Marlins are so valuable, and one reason is their relative scarcity. All models, including the 1881, 1888, 1889, 1891, 1892, 1893, 1895, and 1897 were issued common serial numbers, and only reached about 355 thousand. In comparison, the Winchester 1894 was made over 6 million times. If you have been looking for the right Marlin to collect, for investment, or that classic hunt, but want the added clout of a deluxe rifle, then look no further.
